美國職棒大聯盟（MLB, Major League Baseball）由國聯（the National League）與美聯（the American League）組成。國家協會成立於1871年，是美國第一個成立的職棒聯盟，在幾經改組之後成為今日的國聯。1901年，美聯趁著國聯經營不善縮減編制之際，吸收國聯釋出的資源，成立8隻球隊。美聯聲勢日漸壯大，有超越國聯的趨勢，國聯為避免兩敗俱傷，遂與美聯召開和談建立共識，並統一賽制規則和管理方法。大聯盟的雛型因此產生，直到1920年正式定名。
