自行車比賽自1896年第1屆雅典奧運就出現在奧運的競賽項目，發展至今共衍生出場地賽、公路賽、登山越野賽及極限單車等四種。場地賽分為室內和室外，跑道類似田徑場的跑道，只是在轉彎處加了30至50度的坡度。室內賽場多為木質跑道，室外多為水泥或柏油路。公路賽常採多日比賽，著名賽事包括環西班牙賽、環義大利賽和環法大賽。
